Welcome, Lexie

A Future PA Learns at Culmore Clinic

We're glad to welcome Lexie, a physician assistant student from George Washington University who is completing her clinical rotation with us this fall.

1. What was the most meaningful patient interaction you had during this rotation, and why did it stand out to you?

One of my most meaningful interactions was with a patient who was struggling to manage her stress and anxiety. After taking the time to listen and validate her feelings, she became tearful, gave me a hug, and thanked me. It was a touching reminder of how meaningful it can be for patients to simply feel heard and understood.

2. How did working with uninsured and immigrant patients shape your understanding of healthcare access and equity?

This experience reinforced that healthcare access involves so much more than simply being able to see a provider. It also means being able to afford nutritious food, take time off work for appointments, and navigate an unfamiliar healthcare system in a language that may not be your own.

3. After serving patients at Culmore Clinic, how might you adapt your practice style?

I plan to be more intentional about screening for social determinants of health, including food insecurity, transportation barriers, and health literacy. Identifying these challenges early allows us to better connect patients with resources and develop realistic, sustainable care plans.

4. As a medical learner, what strategies did you use to build trust and communicate effectively with patients who may have never seen a student practitioner?

Fortunately, Culmore's patients are incredibly welcoming and accustomed to working with students! Their openness and willingness to participate in our learning make the clinic such a supportive environment for developing our clinical and communication skills.

5. What did you learn about the role of community-based clinics in filling healthcare gaps for marginalized populations?

It was incredibly heartwarming to see the direct impact of generous donors and the dedication of Culmore's volunteers and staff. This experience showed me how a community coming together can make a meaningful difference in expanding access to healthcare for underserved populations.
