Volunteer Spotlight: Dr. Victor Chang, MD
Volunteers founded Culmore Clinic in 2007 and to this day it is still significantly volunteer run. Regularly we like to spotlight volunteers who support the Culmore Clinic mission and ensure continuous quality, culturally sensitive healthcare at little to no cost to our uninsured patients.
This month we’re featuring Dr. Victor Chang, MD. Dr. Chang is one of our newer volunteer providers, lending his nearly quarter century of experience as a family physician in the United States Air Force, to our patients who lack health insurance. We sat down with him to learn more about how he found out about The Clinic, and what made him decide to take the plunge to volunteer weekly with us!
Dr. Chang, how were we lucky enough to find ourselves in your orbit? In other words, how did you learn about us?
Shortly after I retired from the Air Force, my wife was searching for volunteer opportunities for herself as a math tutor when she came across Culmore Clinic’s posting online which she then shared with me. Well, that’s her story at least…if you ask me, I think she was tired of having me around 24/7 and was trying to find a way to get me out of the house!
We are happy she did! What influenced your decision to ultimately join us as a weekly provider?
I grew up in Northern Virginia and wanted to serve my community. Culmore Clinic’s patient population is uninsured and deeply underserved and I wanted to do something to change that.
So you come to us from the Air Force? Can you tell us about your training and career?
Indeed! I served as a Family Physician with the Air Force for 24 years before I retired recently. I trained at the military’s medical school, Uniformed Services University and then went on to do my residency at Andrews Air Force Base.
And when you’re not at Culmore Clinic volunteering your time, what do you do for fun?
I’ve been married to my wife, mentioned earlier, for 21 years. We love tennis - watching and playing it. And spending time with our 9 year old dog who we lovingly refer to as a fur rascal.
Come meet Dr. Chang sometime on a tour of The Clinic or by volunteering yourself. Learn more about Volunteer Opportunities here and reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Jokabeth, if you have any questions!
